Robert Durst was the secretive heir to a vast, New York real estate fortune when a New York State Police detective began probing the disappearance of Durst's first wife, Kathie, who had been missing for nearly two decades. But as the investigation intensifies and receives national attention, more people die. Durst's best friend, Susan Berman, is shot and killed in Los Angeles. Another friend, a mysterious drifter named Morris Black, is dismembered and his body parts are found floating in Galveston Bay. Durst flees Texas but is found weeks later in Pennsylvania, his hair and eyebrows shaved. He's returned to Texas to stand trial for one murder while police in New York and Los Angeles try to connect him to two others. But as investigators probe deeper, they uncover new clues about Durst and uncover his terrifying secrets. Investigative journalist Matt Birkbeck, who covered the Durst case for Reader’s Digest and People Magazine, tells the true story of the Durst saga in this stunning work of investigative reportage. The bestselling author of A Beautiful Child and the critically acclaimed Deconstructing Sammy, Birkbeck carves a gripping, page-turning narrative in A Deadly Secret. Based on first person interviews with many of the participants and access to the NYPD files into the original investigation of the disappearance of Kathie Durst, Birkbeck exposes the politics of police work, the power of an iconic family, and adds new, updated information to a True Crime classic that is sure to chill your spine.

Given the recent events involving Robert Durst and being unfamiliar with much of this case,I found this book to be an excellent way to catch-up on one of the most chilling true crime stories I have ever read. Birkbeck is as compelling a writer as is this story and as a fan of this genre I will be reading more of his work. "A Deadly Secret" reads like a novel filled with a cast of creepy, sleazy characters, most of whom have a hidden agenda of one sort or another. As the old saying goes: "With friends like these, who needs enemies?" The tragedy is that Robert Durst may indeed be suffering from mental illness, but he is also a brilliant and cunning con-artist and murderer. His wealth has protected him from scrutiny, and coupled with the societal propensity toward characterizing the rich as merely eccentric, when they may indeed be something far more sinister, Durst may have well gotten away with more than one murder. Perhaps more murders than anyone knows. Robert Durst is one scary dude.I do wish there were a few pictures to go along with the colorful cast of characters that populate this book. In the Kindle Edition there were quite a few typos which is a bit distracting. I seem to find more of these in Kindle Editions of books. That said, this is one heck of a read.

A Deadly Secret Matt Birkbeck 9781507582633 Books Reviews
After seeing the HBO documentary about Robert Durst I decided to read the book. I wasn't disappointed. Full of intrigue and written in a very professional manner. Written about a woman's disappearance in 1982 and having an impact on current events it was an interesting read and confirms what I personally believe that when someone isn't caught and punished for a crime they commit they get more brazen and dangerous.
And, of course, Robert Durst had the financial means to aid him in avoiding apprehension. I will research author Matt Birbeck and seek out other books by him.
Good read. While this book differs in many ways from the HBO version of Jinx, the author did a lot of digging and tells had story. I've read about this Durst case for over a decade and now that he sits in jail in New Orleans I feel sure there is more to come. Very poor editing in this edition. I kept feeling that this e book was thrown together without much care. Still the story is good even though now that there is nationwide film footage of the death of Morris Black, it's easy to tell that on many aspects the author just got things completely wrong
I have never met Robert Durst in person and do not have any desire to do so, but last year NY State was looking for a murder - in Brooklyn I believe and the man looked so much like Robert Durst I contacted the detective on the current case. He really questioned me and asked how I met Robert - I assured him I had never met him and didn't have any desire to do so. The detective was very nice, but it turned out Robert wasn't his man. Sure hope the one he was looking for has been caught.
I have also read about Robert's friend, Susan Berman. Susan was getting ready to blow the whistle on something 'big' and she was murdered. I hope some day her murderer is found and it wouldn't surprise me if it is Robert. Robert's wife has also been missing for many years and I have read that many of Susan's friends believed that Susas was getting ready to blow the whistle on Robert. We may never know.
Matt Birkbeck's writing style is not your usual 'whodoneit'. He writes with passion and grace, putting you right in the driver's seat on every page. I became aware of the Kathie Durst case through the ABC special "Vanished" and Cynthia McFadden's excellent reporting. I was one of the people who transcribed the interviews at the time and became totally caught up in the story. I would have never dreamed a few years later that the central character in the case, Bobby Durst, would end up going on trial in Texas for a totally different murder, and then found innocent! As I write this, he is now out of jail and living in a highrise apartment a free man. No one could make this up!
The book offered me valuable information that I had not heard before. Until tonight, after reading it in one sitting, I did not know Kathie Durst's best friend Gilberte, had a secret life of her own. I remember being reduced to floods of tears during her interview on the ABC special, and wishing I had a friend who cared that much about me. After reading this book, I now feel thankful I don't have such friends. Read the book and you'll understand what I mean.
Each person connected with the case (Police, family, friends, etc) are well-defined and sympathetic. It would be so easy to point fingers and say If the Police had handled this case right from the onset, someone would have been arrested and tried for her disappearance and/or murder. But you can't point fingers. Based on the information at the time of Kathie's disappearance, the Police were under the false impression she had returned to Manhattan and had been seen alive after she left her home with Bobby that night. Then there is Susan Berman, his close friend. There are books out on her life and murder well worth reading. She's a whole other story. Another sad child of wealth.
This is one of those incredibly sad stories of pretty girl marries rich boy and does not live happily ever after. You think; If they had only kept the little store upstate everything would have worked out. Who is to blame? A young boy who is traumatized seeing his mother kill herself? A rich family who enables him in everything he does, even though they know he needs help? It reminds me of the Ira Einhorn murder case where he kills his pretty, bright girlfriend and almost gets away with it for years and years. He, too, is enabled by a member of a wealthy family who sends him money to live in Europe, knowing full well he killed her.
The book was written before the trial in Texas and before he was found innocent, so if you are not familiar with the case to-date, you're left hanging. Somehow I have a feeling we have not heard the last of Robert Durst. He will either live out the rest of his life in seclusion or will jump off a roof somewhere like his mother did. This story is not going to have a happy ending. It's an excellent read. Mr. Birkbeck is quite a writer.
